MOUNT TAHAN |
Intro
Tahan is the highest mountain in Peninsular Malaysia. It's 2187m heights above the sea. Tahan is the most challenging mount compared to others. It challenges your physical and mental endurance. Tahan means, "to endure", which means you have to be fit enough to bare the challenge. IIUM Adventure Club organize expeditions to Tahan annually, mostly on the semester break. A Tahan expedition take up to 7 days to complete. We have two options to reach the summit. The first option is, through Kuala Tahan and back to Kuala Tahan. The second option is through Merapuh back to Kuala Tahan. The second option is recommended to climbers, because it is easier, yet not quite challenging. Whatever options we choose, we are aiming the same target which is the summit. Mostly all the climbers will reach the summit at evenings around 6.00pm-8.00pm. It depends on our speed and weather. Those factors may affect our journey.
The Journey
First
Day:
Since the second option is recommended, the journey will begin
from Merapuh. On the first day we will start up to Kuala Juram by
mobile, namely in a pick-up truck. It takes around twenty minutes. In Merapuh we have to
declare all our belongings. The officer in charge will count
whatever we posses. Don't try to skip this, because
at Kuala Tahan they will recount the items. It should be in tally with the
first total. Otherwise you may regret it forever (please take note).
The challenge begins. We will move to Camp Koh which is our
expected first campsite. Kuala Juram to Camp Koh takes around 4
hours, we will pass through rivers and the trail is quite
challenging (Mencanak la tu). We will overnight here. Sleeping
beauty.
Second Day:
Second Day is the most difficult, its is a long trekking hour. We
move to Permatang (Mound). It's around 1 hour trekking (874m).
Within 2 hours of trekking and climbing, we will arrive at Kubang
(Wallow) 1406m. Take a deep breath. We then move to Berlumut (Moss)
1493m. 1 hour trekking. At Berlumut we will take a rest for a
while (It is recomended to have your lunch here).
After that we move to Bonsai (1703). Its will take 3 hours (the
place where we can see a lot of Bonsai trees...small, just like Ciput and Jusoh).
The wind blows coaxing your body, you will feel fresh and cool here. Take a
rest, and having our lunch. You may take a photo, and perform
prayer.
Within 30 minutes we will
arrive at Botak (Bald) 1943m. This is a great place. It seems
like a park. There are a lot of fine trees adorning the place. It's
beautiful. Botak is the last water point (before the Summit). We have to bring
the 5-liter water from here. To reach the summit it takes about 3 hours
from Botak (depending on your strength). The trail are not so difficult yet it
is still challenging. We will overnight at the summit, of course to see the
sunrise in the morning. Make sure you bring along your camera to
capture the beautiful scenery from the summit. The world is under
your toe.The view is really breathtaking.
Be warned, we still have 4 days of journey in front of us.
Day 3:
We will move to Padang (Field) the second campsite. It will take 4 hours. During
those hours we will see different panoramic view and a kind of trail
between one place to another. Oppsss..... you may look at your ugly
shoes covered by mud. This is the most hated trail by the
climbers, cause we have to pass through all the ponds and mud.
We will overnight at Camp Padang. According to historians,
this is the place where a British fighter jet crashed long time ago.
Ayooooyoooo. The wreckage can still be seen if you pass through Gunung Gedung.
At Padang, this is the only place we can find field grass,
inside the thick jungle. Remarkable (and how mysterious).
Day 4 :
We will move to Teku. It is about 8 hours trekking of ups and downs.
From Padang to Teku, we will go over, through and beside certain
mountains. The first mount is Gedung which is approximately 1804m. The
"Grand Canyon" is yours. On the opposite of Gedung we will see
beautiful waterfalls. After that we will going to Mount
Resket (1666m). Within 1 hour trekking from Resket we will arrive
at Tangga 15 (1539m)."Tangga 15" means 15 Stairs. We still
don't know why is call Tangga 15. Don't try to find the stairs,
you will never and ever find it. Tangga 15 is the most difficult.
Its kind of V shape trail. We will use what ever skills we
possess to go up and down in Tangga 15. Challenging woooo. Within 2
hours we will arrive at Gunung Pangkin. About 45 minutes later we will
arrive at Wrays camp. Take a rest for awhile but don't sleep. Going down for 30
minutes we will arrive at Pangkin Bawah. We need 2 - 3 hours to
arrive at Teku. While you arrive at Teku don't forget to take
shower, mandi !!!!!!!!!. We will overnight here.
Day 5:
Camp Tengah is our next destination. Wet! Wet! Wet! and wet. We
have to cross the same river, over and over again for several times
to arrive at Camp Tengah. It takes around 7 - 8 hours trekking. Within 4
hours from Teku we will arrive at Camp Kuala Putih. Have lunch and take
a deep breath for a minute. After that we have to climb Gunung
Rajah (1576m) it takes .about 2 hours uhhhhhhh exhausted oooo!!!.Take
deep breath at the peak.
Going down from Gunung Rajah is the most enjoyable moment. Have fun.
One and half hour later on we will arrive at Camp Tengah. We will overnight here.
Day
6:
Our next destination is Kuala Tahan. The last destination before
we accomplish our expedition. The trail is enjoyable, leisurely
and easier. Within couples of hours we will arrive at Camp
Melantai. Take a rest for the while. Once again on the way to
Kuala Tahan, we will look at our ugly shoes. We are
trekking in the mud and ponds. Beware, though, don't ever believe the
signboard along the journey, it will trap us. Huh within 5 hours trekking we
will arrive in our last destination, which is Kuala Tahan.
Finish! Finish!. At Kuala Tahan once again we have to declare
what ever we possess. Make sure the total is correct and tally with
the first day we arrive at Merapuh, if not we will face a
problem (and a hefty FINE). We will overnight in Kuala Tahan before we return
to our hometown by boat on the next day. Have a fun and Good
Luck. Bye.
